Getting ready for competition? Read this - Get Ready for Your Best Match Yet: The Power of a Pre-Match Routine

If you want to crush it on the range tomorrow, it all starts with one key thing: a solid pre-match routine. The mental game is everything, and trust me, the more you focus on getting your head in the game before match day, the more prepared you’ll feel when you hear "Are you ready?".

Having a routine means there’s less scrambling and more control. You don’t need to overthink things because you’ve already got your process down. For me, consistency is king. I stick to the same steps before...

Thank you for this Ikeo1. I'm a big fan of checklists... At times I don't use them and wind up forgetting simple but important bits of kit.

Like a few weeks ago, taking a shooting class and forgetting to bring a hat.

Edited to add: When I got started in club formula car racing years ago, a good friend gave me some important advice: Before every race, start at one end of the car, and go through tightening *every* fastener along the way. It was a small single-seat car so that wasn't too much a challenge. But it's advice I keep with me today. When I take the long-range rifle out (it's been too long since that happened, but that's another story), I ensure the scope rings and action screws are properly torqued.

Ensuring your optic is properly torqued can save untold frustration wondering why you're not landing shots. Likewise checking all the other bits of kit.

This is a great list for even the range trips. Nice job @ikeo1 Never fails every range trip I forget something or draw a pistol with a dead optic! So damn frustrating!

Have you considered witness marks? Torque and mark with a silver sharpie will save you time.

I like the idea, but I'd have to look in a mirror to see the mark on my forehead and realize the hat isn't there. 😃

More seriously... I'm not a mechanical engineer, perhaps more knowledgeable people can chime in. My *belief* is that for the mis-match to be visible to the eye, the torque would be off by a very large amount.

The reminder of a battery and bringing a spare is epic. Recently a battery died on a newer Holosun 509 I was planning on taking to a class out of state. Glad I checked it. The factory battery had died after several months, most of that time was sitting in the armory. The night before I departed, when I put the weapons in the car for an early departure, I noticed that I didn’t see the dot. Verification that the RDS was switched “on” by pressing the “+” button had zero result, so it was time to open the packaged spare. That solved the issue, and the RDS ran perfectly for the whole class. I brought an additional packaged battery along as well, just in case.
