Ever heard of a “Ross rifle”? Well, I sort of want one. Yes I know Canadians are a bunch of whiny ars hypocrites about tarrifs and a bunch of woke ars 1/2 commies but they did, per capita, make giant sacrifices in WW eleven. I don’t like maple syrup much either but I find Sir Charles Henry Augustus Frederick Lockhart Ross to be an interesting historical figure. His firearm is not without its drawbacks. For instance, if you put the bolt together wrong, it will fire out of battery and drive a 10 oz (300 grams for you metric phags and Canadians) bolt assembly into your scull. So there’s that. But still I want one. I carry $1M in life in insurance, my wife and kids will be fine without me. I just find it to be a marvelous piece of of engineering and I want one. Finding one in .280 Ross would be fantastic but I’d be thrilled in a .303 Brit version as well. Heck I’d be happy with a bubba’d Ross.

 
They are cool rifles, I passively keep an eye on GB and other sites for them. Straightpulls in general are just neat guns. I have an M95 that’s fun to shoot as well.

If you like the straight pulls, AIM has Swiss K11’s and K31’s right now ranging from $399-$599. I got 2 of them and am very pleased. They are much smoother action, better fit and finish and more accurate than either of my mannlichers, both Styer’s were fantastic.



I think I may buy a few more… IMO, they will probably track better than the S&P 500

Yep, have a nice K31 too. I like personalized guns and having the troop tag under the plate is cool.
 
So now I have a pair of Ross 1905’s that I bought accidentally. Seriously, I placed the only bid on this pair and the bid I placed was very low for just a single rifle. Now I own 2 of them. Does anyone know how to take them a apart?

Turns out (I couldn’t tell when I was looking at the GB pictures) that they are both chrome dipped. The chrome wouldn’t be that difficult to remove and from the bits which have flaked off, it seems the original finish is still under there and in petty good condition. That said. They sure seem like they may have belonged to a VFW post. I may decide to keep the chrome or possible even have them re-chromed. But first I need to get them apart. These are fairly rare rifles as Ross rifles go. These are 2 of the exactly 20,000 contract rifles the US bought from Caniduh for training purposes.

Stocks are stamped “US” and have a flaming bomb

I haven’t gotten into them yet. I’m still working on my 1888 trapdoor. Getting it right is quite the rabbit hole. I only should work on 1 gun at a time. I actually decided to do a rust conversion and spring replacements on my m1 carbine while the trapdoor was in progress and with my organizational defect, it turned out to be a big mistake. I’ll pull out of it but 1 gun at a time is my speed. I actually want a mark 3 for my collection. The bolt lugs fascinate me.
 
Update: seems those contract rifles are even more scarce than I had thought. Very few of them survive. I’ve finally gotten into them and the chrome would need to be removed. They look great from 10’ but up close it has issues. The borescope looks promising. I didn’t record my scan of the crown but it’s not bad at all.


I have not found any providence as to who had prior possession of these rifles. Overall they are fairly complete and with most any other rifle, sourcing the missing or damaged parts might be expensive but in this case it appears to be impossible.

Issues:
1 ea Broken butstock at bayonet lug; broken piece fits perfectly, repair.
1 ea handguard split down the middle; halves fit perfectly, repair
4 ea missing front sight hood screw; purchased from online vendor
2 ea missing / bent bolt stop spring; I have a bent example, will find suitable replacement
1 ea missing front sight baseplate screw; unobtanium, will manufacture replacement from other example
1 ea missing windage knob, detention and spring; unobtanium, will manufacture replacements

I’ve already tap tap tap straightened out the bent rear sight pieces.

I found a very competent refinishing service who can remove the chrome without damage or embrittlement at a very reasonable price

I have been fussing around with rust blue, these will probably come back in the white so looks like a full multi pass rust blue using the humidity box, probably 1 entire weekend.

One question: I don’t think I want them to look BNIB but do I want to soften up the abrasions to the butplates before I rust blue them?
