On June 30, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 1948 (AB 1948) into law. AB 1948 pertains to the lawful carrying of firearms under a California Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license.
Beginning January 1, 2027, the law extends the duration of a California CCW license to three years from the date of issuance. This applies to both new CCW licenses and CCW renewal licenses.
Any CCW license issued before January 1, 2027, will remain valid for two years from its date of issuance. Upon renewal, the renewed CCW license will be valid for three years from the date of issuance.
Although AB 1948 was signed into law on June 30, 2026, these changes do not take effect until January 1, 2027.
