Don't worry - CRPA (and they really mean it this time) filed a lawsuit to stop all these Counties who are taking more than a year to process applications!!!!

Hopefully they ask for half that (6 months). They should also look into; for those of us with CCW a new program to waive the biannual fees by 20% each renewal- yep right down to where there are no fees.

I thought about giving a free renewal if one goes 3 renewals without blasting someone, but thought that wouldn't be as well received.

Considering self defense is a God given right and a natural instinct relative to being attacked, and that the Right to bear arms is an enumerated Right in our Constitution (NOT granted by), any ccw permit process is reprehensible.

That being said, an onerous and lengthy process is especially tyranical.
6 months is unacceptable.

That's a bunch of BS that the Sheriff Dept. is requiring people to apply to their city.
It should be a resident's choice as to whether to apply to their PD or Sherriff Dept, as they are a resident of both jurisdictions.
Additionally, since some of those cities are not yet up and running with their own ccw process the Sherriff should be OBLIGATED to accept applications from those residents affected.
I would recommend pressing the Sherriff, hard, to comply with the law and process the applications.

Yeah, in an ideal world, I agree that it should be a resident's choice, but sounds like some cities have been much faster than CoCo (heard good things about Concord PD and San Leandro (Alameda County), for example). Also heard about some nightmare cities like Fremont, which has this insane requirement:

• Applicants are required to list three (3) references, noting the following:
  • One (1) of the three (3) references MUST be a person as described in Pen. Code § 273.5(b) (e.g., current of former spouse, current or former cohabitant, fiancée, someone with whom you have or previously had an engagement or dating relationship, mother or father of your child).
  • If applicable, at least one (1) of the three (3) references MUST be your current cohabitant.
• All three references will do an in-person interview with the background investigator. The background investigator will contact them to set up the interview.

I picked up my ccw permit this morning and wanted to give my timeline and costs that I can remember.

Live scan completed late August 2023 - $133
I knew they were getting close to reviewing my live scan date, so I completed my 16 hours CCW training before Oct 26-27, 2024 - ~$450
Received notification to schedule range qualification Nov 19, 2024
Took the next available opening on Nov 23, 2024 at 3pm
There were 6 of us and we all passed. I left first since I had only 1 gun and everyone else had 2.
Received application approved notification on Nov 27, 2024
Had to login the permitium site to make final payment - $160
After making payment, had to choose date and time to pick up from the sheriff's office. Dec 5, 2024 at 830am
When I showed up, I just gave them my drivers license and she gave me my permit card. The picture used was the same as on my license. Took all of 1 min.

So in total it cost me a minimum of ~$743, not including the cost of ammo and range time.

Some of the cities listed on the sheriff website currently are not set up for CCW or are taking applications. The sheriff office said I can still apply through them but they are behind 15 months

How long are renewals taking to process these days? I set up my permittium account and filled out the renewal info a few weeks ago, a little over 3 months before my permit expires. (It used to say you could do it 90 days before, now apparently 120 days is allowed which I didn't realize). When I first got my permit they were not using permittium yet. My training is scheduled for January. Permittium still says my renewal is waiting to be assigned to an investigator.

Is it possible to renew my CCW with Concord PD if I got mine through CoCo Sherriff without going through the whole process again? I would have gotten mine through Concord PD since they allow RDS on hand guns.

August 2023 - After more than a year of NOTHING, they sent a letter stating they are no longer processing paper applications and I would need to reapply online through permitium
November 2024 - Received notification my application was approved
December 2024 - Took 16 hour class and qualified at sheriff range
January 2025 - Picked up CCW permit

The good news for you is that from this point forward, the process moves quickly.
I think we can all agree though that 2 years, 2.5 years...those are insanely, unjustifiably, long times. Mind boggling really.

For those that qualified with CCCSD... how much scrutiny did they give to the gun? Is an aftermarket trigger going to get flagged?

Not much scrutiny at all. At the end of the day they know that even if you have no aftermarket trigger when you qualify, you could still go home and install one as soon as you leave. BUT, think about this, if heaven forbid, you actually had to use the weapon, it will be confiscated as evidence, that trigger WILL be found/noticed, your whole CCW validity will be questioned and up for debate...all for a trigger? You're your own person, but to me it just doesn't seem worth it at all. We're talking possible life or death scenarios, court cases, your personal freedom on the line, lives on the line...all of that would be stressful enough without an extra worry added into it.

It's basically just a question of economics. There's only a few attorneys at the CRPA and it's funded mostly by donations, so they can only do so much. None of the cases they bring have enormous fee shifting provisions either, so they're all economic losers and not self-funding.

The renewal requires an 8 hour course with an approved trainer, plus in addition to that, the same qual shoot at the sheriff's range with the pistols that will be on your permit.

When you start your renewal process and fill out your permitium online application, it asks what weapons you want on your new permit. I have checked with the CCW sheriff specialist and she has confirmed that the weapons listed on the permitium application for new and renewals do not matter. The only weapons that will go on your permit are the weapons that you qualify with at the sheriff's range during your qualification.

I would start on your renewal as soon as you are allowed to. The instructions are on their CCW page. I believe soonest you can apply is 120 days form when your permit expires. I did my training before my renewal was approved, and I did all the steps as soon as possible (schedule qualifying, providing my training, etc) and although I don't have my new permit yet, I am guessing the process for me will be about 2 months. I have heard some renewals starting before the holidays will take closer to 3 months, which gets a bit close to the deadline.

How long did it take to hear back from permitium after you submitted training documents? I'm Coming up on 10 days since I submitted and have not heard anything back from them..

5 days after submitting proof of 16 hour training I received the email with instructions to schedule qualification at sheriff range.
3 days after qualifying at sheriff range I received the email to schedule pickup time. Next available pickup time was a week out.

I never had any luck calling, but found them fairly responsive to emails, so maybe send one off if you're getting curious
