Mixed feelings on mine. Wouldn’t do it again. Got an Ithaca with Numax slide and 1979 barrel. It was a WW1 Colt frame repurposed by Ithaca in 1943. . It has Colt stamps on the inside . SA/ RIA/ OB79 (Barstow Marine base) stamps.
Shoots low( it’s not me). Bought a new old stock Vietnam era USGI Colt barrel. Going to have the slide fit to the frame and the barrel to the slide. Hopefully the gunsmith can fix the POA. For fun , I got an Ithaca double stamp replacement slide. I had the opportunity to buy all correct parts , but why? I have a little collection of new old stock including a never shot HS barrel,

That was round 2 and the price has gone up plus CA 11% tax. It would be heartbreaking to get another mixmaster for that price. I’ve seen some pics that look they were dragged behind a truck.

I was disappointed with my Round 1 Service Grade (RR frame/Colt Slide). Super heavy park, bit of a nick on the barrel crown, etc. I sent it back to CMP and they cleaned up the nick and showed me how to use a carding brush and oil to make the park look better. They paid shipping both ways, which was nice. I put it back in the case once it came back and haven't touched it since, haha!! Never shot it either.

Round 3 went much better: This time I asked for a Field Grade and got a Union Switch & Signal frame/Colt slide with original finish. Just what I wanted!! Still haven't shot it, so who knows if it's any good, haha!!

One thing I will say about the CMP: Some of the nicest people I've ever met. I took the Advanced Maintenace Class, where you get to build your own M1, in 2018. What a great experience!! I see the course fee has gone WAY up since 2018, haha!! But man was it fun. The tour of the CMP warehouse alone was almost worth the admission price!!

The CMP sales program is unique for mail order purchases.. You have no idea what you will receive. At least with rifles, a trip to one of the stores allows you to inspect the purchase beforehand. Mail order rifles and 1911's have always been sight unseen and the CMP forum is full of disappointment is what is received via mail order. CMP does what they can to make a customer happy, but I'm sure they won't swap out an item with something "more preferred". It is just luck of the draw what is received. My Round 3 RR / RR field grade was a nice piece and I am happy with it. Not sure I will participate again and just purchase elsewhere like I did with my 43 Ithaca and US&S.

People win the CMP lottery occasionally but not me. I’m not a collector , I’m a shooter. II’ve got about 450 rounds through it and it hit steel at 50 yards by misaligning the sights. It’s a decent shooter, after a tune up , it will get better . I did get a couple of good offers because it had Marine Corp markings but kept it. It’s as arrived except for a new recoil spring and a National Match USGI barrel bushing.

I brought it into my local gun store when I first got it and they asked what’s wrong with it? They have a phenomenal consignment display. I asked how often they come in. They said : Never, they are unicorns. If something comes in, the staff buys it.

FYI, it looks like the cap is now 4 as of May 2025.
