Has anyone had any experience with Renewing their CCW with the City of Torrance?

My first/current CCW is with LASD, but it looks like I will have to renew with the city of Torrance.

I haven't renewed, but I dropped off my application on Friday. I don't know if anything I've experienced will be useful to you, but feel free to ask, or I can just post my ongoing experience here.

Years ago when I wanted to get my CCW, Torrance was not issuing any CCWs, There was also a Youtube video of someone trying to schedule his interview at the Tlorrance PD and they were just giving him the runaround.
Once Bruen went through I decided to apply to the LASD and they granted me my CCW. I was looking up the renewal process on the LASD website and figured out that I won't be able to renew with LASD and will have to go through the TPD for my renewal next year.

I also did read on the Torrance CCW site a statement regarding reviewing their policy post SB-2 (when it actually will be updated who knows haha).

Hey there! Sorry I never received a notification and I just checked back here in a good while. I actually did hear back! I was given a call at the beginning of August and had my interview on the 8th. It surprised me to have heard back so quickly, considering they told me they couldn't give me an estimate. That puts the wait at about 3 months. Within the same week the detective called my references, and I'm just waiting on the background check now. I can go ahead and get my CCW class done, and I'll have 6 months from approval (if granted) to finish the training.

The interview itself was straightforward too, took maybe 15 minutes. All in all, it's been a good and fast experience so far!

Awesome, that's great to hear, thanks! I was worried I'd be waiting forever but 3 months is actually not bad at all.

One question though, if I'm not misunderstanding I thought we got rid of the need to list any references for CCW with Bruen, was that something you opted to provide anyways or is it mandatory and I'm mistaking it with some other change to the CCW process? I'm not worried about providing them at all, just curious to know if it went the same way as the "good cause" requirement.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it's required or it was optional. I wasn't aware of Bruen at the time and I just filled out everything I saw on the form, haha. You can always call TPD and ask! I've only been getting into shooting in the last 5 or 6 months and been learning as I go.

Got it, thanks again! I'm hoping to get the process started tomorrow and will definitely ask a bunch of questions to make sure I get everything right.

So far it at least seems more straightforward than Hawthorne and definitely way better in terms of pricing; I thought Hawthorne's was exorbitant so I figured I'd wait. The price difference is at least a couple training classes worth, or easily several good range days haha.

I'll try and update how everything goes here so if anyone else in Torrance wants to apply we can continue to have up-to-date info regarding the process.

You're very welcome, and I wish you the best of luck today! I haven't had to try to apply to other cities but I'd definitely agree that the process was pretty straightforward. If I remember right, applying for a FFL03 and COE was more complex in my opinion. I will say if you haven't already gone to the police station, that they only accept cash when paying for your CCW application fee, or at least they only did when I was there.

Sorry to hear about the price difference, I already winced enough when it came time to get fingerprinted after the interview, ran me almost $120. The place they recommend is good though, and where I've gone for other livescan needs.

I was under the impression that if LASD issued your CCW, renewals would be with LASD, the issuing agency, as well.
Under what circumstance do you need to renew with another agency (TPD in this case) ?

If I recall correctly, starting this year I think, LASD has started dealing with only LA and unincorporated LA county that doesn't have their own PDs now, to help with their backlog. So the people that live somewhere like here in Torrance that used to be able to apply for a CCW with LASD, can no longer apply or renew and have to go through their local IAs.

Hello, I would suggest that you contact the Torrance Police Department to hear directly from them. Special Investigations Unit Detective Lucas Ryono (lryono@torranceca.gov) is a vary helpful resource in their CCW Unit.

Any update on this? Just got my LASD ccw and moved to Torrance during the process. Trying to find some info on my similar situation

I never contacted Det. Ryono. My CCW license expires in Novemebr and I submitted an application to TPD on June 26. Now I sit and wait for a reply from TPD.

I would have gone back to LASD if they would allow it. On the LASD CCW website, it says this:
Effective August 1, 2022

The LASD will only accept first-time CCW applications from those who reside within our contract cities or unincorporated communities. Applicants residing in a municipality other than those served by the LASD shall contact their local police department and apply for a CCW license.

I took it to mean that I need to apply with TPD.

On the TPD website, it says this:

NOTICE FOR RENEWAL: If your CCW license was issued by an agency other than the Torrance Police Department, you will need to apply as a NEW applicant. If you are renewing a CCW license issued by the Torrance Police Department, you may not apply until 180 days before the expiration date listed on your current CCW license. Appplications will be processed in the order they are submitted. You may track the progress/status of your order using the Order Tracker.
