CCW Lapse

For those of you who have renewed your ccw recently: did it lapse? If it did, did it affect which duration of class you had to take e.g. 8hr or 16hr.

My IA is lagging on processing my renewal paperwork and hasn't contacted me since I submitted everything in May.

Contact them to validate they got everything. Generally if you started your process before the lapse they do not treat it as a new application.

The state now allows a maximum of a 90-day lapse, but I don't think IA processing time counts as long as your application is complete and your course has been completed and submitted in the window.

Did you submit your Models & Serials with your renewal app? I didn't, thinking I would do it after the training and qual. It turned out my app was sitting in Permitium not moving because I hadn't supplied that information. As soon as I did (after and email to the IA listing the guns/serials and an explanation I forgot to submit them) things moved along fairly quickly. Also, they reached out for a copy of my birth certificate which is apparently a new requirement that didn't exist years ago. I just picked up my renewed CCW last week.

You absolutely need to contact them ASAP, not just sit back and wait for something to happen.

The application packet and process is the same whether it's initial or renewal (make & model w/serial included) I handed my packet directly to the current detective that's in charge of CCWs for the department.

The IA instructs people to only take the class/range qual after the interview regardless of first time app or renewing. Im guessing to save people from spending money on the class only to be denied.

Some background, the detective that issued my initial ccw retired last year, took me 4 months to get the permit. This new detective seems too busy to answer his phone after I submitted my renewal packet. I've asked the department for his email address and instead they gave me the ccw unit's email address - I've sent two emails inquiring the next steps for the renewal process and if there's anything I can do on my end to help expedite the process (take the class, range qual) since my background is spotless.

Ive only had one incident with my ccw and chp - got rear ended and told the chip the whole spiel, he didn't care, didn't even ask to see the permit or firearm. I reported it via phone and email to my IA.

no phone number for the unit. I was only given the cell number of the new detective when I called to report my contact with chp while carrying.

Which IA is this? When does your permit expire?

Every police department has a main number, Records, Administration, and a supervisory chain of command. If your assigned detective isn't responding, ask to speak with his supervisor or confirm through Records that your renewal packet is in the system.

Apparently it's a new policy in my County:

The application requires "proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status as part of all CCW applications, including renewals"

• Birth certificate (if born in the U.S.)
• U.S. Passport
• Naturalization Certificate
• Permanent Resident Card

Oh okay that makes more sense. I thought you meant everyone had to have a provided birth certificate lol

I only submit my renewal app after I have done the training and qual. I also have a folder with all my documents scanned such as birth certificate, etc. and I just reupload everything for the renewals and get it all done in one shot.

This next time around though it won't be as easy because we will have to do a LiveScan after we submit the renewal application.

Sounds like an agency choice, not DOJ. I renewed just last month & wasn't asked for mine.

If your DL is a REAL ID you should be okay I think. I had to give passport because I have the regular DL

I had mine come close lapsing. Actually it it did before I got my renewed license. I was without it for about a month. Luckily I submitted my renewal in time to move forward with the renewal vs starting from scratch and having to take the longer classes. Have a little patience and trust the process.

Update:

Got a call back yesterday and was scheduled to come into the station for a in house range qual at the station (El Monte PD). After that, I should be able to pay for and pick up my new permit within a week. It was mentioned that there is no grace period if a CCW expires before turning in any renewal paperwork according to AB 1078 and that they try to process renewals as quickly as possible, even though I'm now two days expired.

Overall im satisfied with everything though.
