Pics Budget Mid-Range Bolt Gun

Hi Gunners,
This little guy came to me as a salvage job a decade ago, '67 Ishapore 2A1 7.62X51. It had an ATI synth stock, I added an illuminated Cheapanese big glass, mount, rings, econo bipod, sling and a Cabela's cheek piece. I also had a 5 round X51 mag to kinda keep with the "sport" theme. I have 10s & 12s and scrounged enough MKIII furniture and metal bits to resto, but it doesn't bother me the way it's set-up. If you shoot slow it groups OK with Indian milsurp FMJ at 300 yards, which is what I was after. Didn't bed the barrel but I did ad a little "up" tension at the barrel band. Turned out acceptable and as always was built for dirt ducat$, PAX

I've killed a lot of pigs with a $49 sporterized Enfield. The pigs never inquired how much I spent on my rifle.

I had a buddy run a m118lr reamer on a hand selected milsurp with a commonly available Criterion blank.

It was the culmination of us buying under $100 milsurps off a stinking pile or random barrel of rifles throughout the 90s.

That magic thing for us was a rifle that shot surplus ball somewhat as tight as a match clone load.

I have a real thing for German vs Brit surplus past 400yds. You can hear the difference with in spec ball in steel.

We used to pull them and reroll with a box of 175s or 180s if we found the right combo.

Enfield actions are awesome, we never talked about it much since they were everywhere cheap AF.

If you’re sitting on a stock pile of Rusky mil-surp 7.62x39, I can recommend a Ruger American Ranch rifle. Shoots 2minutes with Wolf, even Tula. Takes Mini-30 mags. The last rifle I bought from Turner’s for $369. Fun truck gun, good for inside of 200 yards. I have to hold up going further out, but A lit of fun mortaring in my shots at 400.

I can attest o the RAR as being a great X39shooter. It's distant American ballistic cousin, the .30-30, has similar performance with pointy boolits in this little guy, Savage 325, fugly but deadly. I like a .303 Brit sport job too but they can reach out there a further PAX

The most recent shooter on Texas plinking was getting it done with a basic $200 barrel and a 700 action.

Grab something cheap in an odd caliber. Make sure the bolt face is a size you can live with. Rebarrel the action. Look at cast off older cheap chassis or stocks.

Pour some $ into glass with a reasonable magnification and clarity for the ranges you can drive to easily.

Shot a lot, all the time.
Then find ranges with different conditions and shoot a lot.

No reason to overbuy anything and not shoot.
