Where are you looking to compete? I reached out to my local USPSA here in Piru and was gonna try and spectate a match next month before diving right in. I also plan on using my MP 2.0 but I have the compact.

I observed an IPDA match before I did my first match (have done 3 USPSA matches so far) and glad I did. Gets you acquainted with the safety protocols etc before you jump in. If there are USPSA classes nearby you should do one of those first too - you will get to shoot some stages in a less stressful environment which is nice

FWIW, I shot my first USPSA match today, and while it was humbling and I made quite a few mistakes from no stage planning experience, the squad was very supportive. All you have to do is go show up with the gear you have, don't get DQ'd, and have fun. You will take away a laundry list of things to improve on, which makes it even more motivating to get better. Be sure to tell the squad this is my first match, as they will go out of their way to make sure you know the drill and how things work.

Honestly, I was very nervous about jumping into a match and had the same thoughts about maybe observing one in person first. But after talking with several folks they all encouraged me to just get into a match, and I’m glad I did. Started off fairly simple with a couple of steel matches, then did an all classifier match at Piru, and just shot the Oh Shoot 5.11 match at Prado this past Saturday. Lots of mistakes and brain farts while running some of the stages, as was fully expected, but also pleasantly surprised myself in navigating through others. By no means was I the fastest or most accurate shooter in the field, but everyone was very supportive and encouraging throughout every match, which makes it all that much easier to want to get right back out there and do it again.

I didn't know Oh Shoot had matches on Saturday afternoons, are they just the morning matches that extend into the afternoon?

They have afternoon squads as does Piru. Afternoon squads are usually the higher number squads (I.e. squad 7,8,9 etc)

Seems it depends on the match. For this one they ended up running Saturday morning and afternoon squads (separate entries with separate start times, not just spillover from the morning), and also Sunday morning, though there were definitely far fewer shooters out there Saturday afternoon. Quite a turnout overall with 231 shooters across all sessions.

Nice. You should try to jump into the big match they’re doing on 4th of July weekend. A bunch of spots just opened up for both days.
