Attacking dog?

That would almost be like the equivalent of slapping somebody with slippers or shower shoes; no?

like most self defense, it's about the placement haha.

My experience of a dog fight it would be hard to just spray one dog. Most likely you will be spraying both dogs as you don’t want to wait to try to find the perfect spot and time to just get the attacking dog. Just spray and take your dog home or to the vet to get cleaned up.

Carry the pepper spray do not attach to leash as yo7 may have to let go of the leash.

This is why I just don't let my dog close to strange potentially aggressive dogs. You can read them and tell pretty quickly if they are friendly. No growling, no barking, look at the tail. Don't let them get close enough and there never will be a fight. I grab my own dog by the collar and put myself in between. Only in very rare circumstances will I do the "stop and sniff" with a strangers dog, it's only when the dog is clearly non aggressive.

It's real, I used to raise cows and sheep and some of the old cowboys would do it to calves that were a bit too strong to wrestle down for doctoring or trailering or whatever. Ive heard of it on dogs but I haven't seen it myself. It's also a wrestling move ha

Honestly I doubt the even washed their hands, when you work cows all day you are already covered in manure anyway. We were in the middle of nowhere I think if you brought hand sanitizer in the truck they would just make fun of you. The only acceptable way would be to rinse it in coors

Yeh, sounds like one of those scenarios where if someone brought gloves while everyone else isn’t wearing gloves; it’s not acceptable.

Pepper spray has always been effective for me when encountering aggressive dogs “on the job”. Multiple uses, as many successful outcomes. Use of a firearm is going to have LE crawling all over you even if eventually deemed necessary and lawful. My wife produced a baseball bat for home defense when we started dating. I asked her what she was going to do with it after she got beat with it by her assailant. Feel the same about walking sticks and such. Serious fur missiles don’t give a damn about sticks.

But land sharks care very much about walking sticks that are also cattle prods or stun guns.

Doesn't bear spray sort of shoot a wider mist "cloud" type pattern where as the pepper spray outputs a stream?

Bear spray delivers a MUCH higher volume of product at a much greater range and in a fog pattern, additionally bear spray has a much more potent concentration of capsicum. Pepper spray is intended to deter human beings, shoots a stream of less potent capsicum with a shorter range.

That Pitbull is just going to smile and keep on clamped down on your pooch or your leg, face, hand, or wiener.
I would keep those tactics for the bedroom, not in a dog fight. Lol

I don’t know why so many people are discussing bear spray. She cannot carry bear spray in her neighborhood while walking here dog. It is illegal to carry more than 2.5 ounces of pepper spray. Read Penal Code section 22810(e)(1).

Bear spray IS pepper spray. It is just a larger quantity of pepper spray (often with a higher concentration of major capsaicinoids than most personal defense sprays) in a canister that disperses it further/wider. Unless she is hiking somewhere it is reasonable to anticipate a bear encounter, carrying bear spray isn’t a legal option.

Again, good quality pepper spray (paired with some practice) is fine for a dog.

I’ll take my chances explaining Bear vs Pepper spray to the cops rather than using a firearm.
Plus OP did not mention location. Maybe rural where Bear and Big cats roam.

Again Pepper or Bear spray over firearm for a dog attack. I choose pepper spray because it’s legal, works well on dogs AND people. Once you spray dogs, you may also have to deal with angry dog owner. Pepper spray works well on both.

Are you holding the lease with strong hand? Do you drop lease when you pull and aim?
Does first shot hit? What if owner of Big Dog is there with leash?
What if you are in a crowded area?

Sadly what if. Dont keep you safe. Id honestly try to give the dog the biggest kick i could mange and hope itnruns off. But i cant know what if it stops or what if its friendly. There are so many video of friendly dog on and off leases locked onto small dogs neck while owners are trying to pull them off panicking scream and hitting there dog. You need a bite break which is not your avg edc.

I have whacked a stray dog on the snout with a chuck it, it did actually work

UPS drivers in Ontario are told to smack dogs upside the head with their DIAD while blocking with the box... I may... or may not have tested the strength of a DIAD on an attacking dog that came out of the blue while delivering...if I did, I came out the winner.

Also, putting yourself in a situation where you fired at a shih tzu because your ankles were about to get licked and now getting served with a civil lawsuit on top of charges for discharging within a city just seems silly. If you're armed (legally or otherwise) you will know when its time to use (deadly?) force.
