CCW AR Pistols

What's the practical reason someone would want to have an AR Pistol on their CCW? I realize people may want it "just to have it" or because of their "2a rights", etc.. I'm all for that, but realistically/practically speaking why would you want to CCW an AR pistol?

I can only think of off body carry as the only way to really carry it (in a bag/backpack)... which to me would take a long time to deploy.. is the idea it would be a 2ndary weapon if your on body CCW isn't enough?

kinda off topic but an ar pistol is a no go for a ccw permit for San Diego Sheriff. I’m not aware of any IA in Cali that would let u have one on your permit.

However, if it was allowed I would keep it as a trunk gun.

I believe people want it so if the end of the world happens when you are away from your home, then you have a better weapon for that situation.

Ever seen Heat? Trenchcoat carry is the preferred method.

Pretty much. There’s a lot of guys who live in a perpetual state of “What If?” and want to be as prepared for any eventuality as possible. I don't necessarily disagree with that mindset, and if we lived in a state that didn't have rampant car break-ins and restrictive safe transport laws I would probably have a "truck gun" myself just because. Realistically though, I don't see myself in any situation where I'd need more than the CCW + extra mag I'm already carrying so it's kind of a moot point.

Ah makes sense so they have a legal way to carry loaded in vehicle. Makes sense. Although, I thought by having the CCW permit you are already covered with any loaded firearm in your vehicle (even if not on permit) or does that vary by county / IA rules?

ya no. in CA you’re only allowed the handguns listed on the permit specifically by serial #. my non-resident AZ permit has no such info and iirc allows for any legal handgun, including ar pistols.

I thought having a CCW exempts you from one of the Penal Codes regarding having loaded firearms in your vehicle. Perhaps not, I don't recall the PC, but I'll try to find it later today.

Carrying loaded in a vehicle is prohibited by CA PEN §25850: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/...sion=5.&title=4.&part=6.&chapter=3.&article=2.

§25850. (a) A person is guilty of carrying a loaded firearm when the person carries a loaded firearm on the person or in a vehicle while in any public place or on any public street in an incorporated city or in any public place or on any public street in a prohibited area of unincorporated territory.

CA PEN §26010 provides a CCW exemption from §25850, but only when carrying “as authorized” under the CCW provisions. That means firearms listed on the permit. Add to this the provision of SB 2 which limits the number of CCW-authorized guns you can carry at one time to only 2, and everything else, including CCW guns needs to be unloaded and locked up.

Which follows my view- issuing agencies need to get out of the gun rules business. If its legal in the state, then it should ok for a CCW permit.

I think for an agency, selfishly, it would get them the heck out of some liability. An example would be prohibiting a flashlight or red dot- and a CCW holder does so then blasts the wrong person in a dark room. Going to be some 'splaining to do by the IA (when they get sued by the family) why seeing the target (or aiming) "better" is a bad thing when all their officers use those tools. Oops.
