Ammo?

I’m pretty new to competition shooting and was wondering what everyone recommends for a decent, budget friendly 9mm ammo.
I’ve mainly been shooting 115 grain, but I know that heavier loads are a better option for competition. Just not sure where to spend my money. I’d love to hear what you guys have been running and how it’s been working for you, especially in terms of reliability and recoil.

if you are shooting steel, you may want to upgrade to 124 grain to make sure steel is knocked down. 147 grain is good and less recoil and if you can find it the Federal Syntech 150 grain is great stuff, but hard to find and a bit more expensive.

So far I've mostly run magtech 115g & 124g.

2k Rounds of Steel Case
1k+ Rounds of 115g Brass case
Few hundred of the 124g

I've also run Winchester White Box at a couple matches 115g, no issues.

Remington UMC at one match 115g

Ran my reloads 124g in a couple matches as well.

Didn't really notice a much of a difference, BUT I'm shooting them from a "2011" with a comp FWIW. Also ran magtech 115g brass case when I've shot my Glock 34. No issues there other than some double feeds, but that was one of my magazines.

I'm sure you'll get great opinions and experiences here, but if you're just starting out, I think you should just go with whatever's cheapest that you know runs reliably in what you have, whether it's 115gr or 124gr. That way you can stretch your budget to cover more ammo and range/competition fees.

I use to order all my ammo from target sports but now bit the bullet and reload all my own.
target sports has new republic 124gr for like $0.25 a round.
reloading is a game changer depending on how often/much you shoot.

LOTS of people do it.
It's $32/year to maintain after you have it setup and you will save more than that on your first order because the 11% ammo tax will not be collected by sellers outside of CA.

Just to clarify: After initial “buy-in” of about $130…

The COE renewal is $22 every year. (No finger prints for renewal).
The FFL-03 renewal is $30 every 3 years. (No fingerprints at any stage).

So, the $30 FFL-03 is amortized at $10/year, bringing the average renewal to $32/year over 3 years.
