Question Ak gunsmiths in Northern California?

Hello Caguns Fam,

Hope your day is going well.

Who do you guys recommend for AK gunsmith in Nor-Cal; for re-doing the rivets for rear trunnion or maybe even rear trunnion swap? Do they also offer parkerizing? Not looking to cerakote.

Must be one that is not hassling for something like an AK pistol; trying not to send out of state if I don’t have to. However, I have read of some good ones out of state.

Seems like most gunsmiths do the basics up here such as work on AR, Glock, and 1911/2011. Not looking for a gunsmith who doesn’t have much experience with AK’s or is going to learn off of my Ak.

Trying not to send out of state if I don’t have to. Maybe a little more hesitant since it’s a pistol; compared to rifle. Maybe I would need to talk to the gunsmith out of state to make sure they won’t have any hesitations or issues with sending the pistol with comp mag back to cali ffl.

But the upside to sending it out is I would be able to deal with people with more history and speciality in dealing with AK.

I’m aware of them. Stepped in there before when I was around the area. Felt like I was in town in a rural area up north; all over again.

Arn’t they pretty backed up? I remember asking an employee and they said they require a $150 inspection fee before even being given a quote? They charge by the hour? They couldn’t even give me a approximate estimate of how many hours?

I would probably trust him with any firearm mankind has created.
Honestly though, I took my Saiga to him. He converted the front end for me which included heat resizing some of the new parts to fit the barrel profile. He pressed on new parts and had this thing looking amazing and the fit and finish was incredible.
Talk about pricing ahead of time but understand you pay for quality work. although it takes a long time for him to get the gun turned around because he's very busy.
If you're serious about getting quality AK work done though he's your guy

What’s his turn around time after he receives it for work? How backed up is he? Do I need to to wait 4-8 months before the firearm is even worked on?
 
Dude do not trust any gun smith in CA. People giving names nobody’s heard of in AK world send it out of state they all work with CA. You also won’t get taxed to hell

Yeah that’s not a good Builder. Dude stop listening to this people. Have send AKs to AK builder not this random dudes who work on any gun for money.
I never even heard of this people. I wouldn’t trust them with my 74 88 and 87 kits or SGLs or ak12 kit.

Mine just felt like money pits so I diversified.

Just call some people and ask. I had good luck with Parhams customs in north Texas. I called a few other companies and most were totally fine with shipping back to CA. I think rifle dynamics has a list on their website of other companies they vouch for since Jim Fuller is semi retired it seems
 
I am in Southern California and have been working-on and building AK's for 15+ years.
I do all work by in-person shop visit, while you wait/watch.
I also do parkerizing.
Make an appointment, drive down and see it all go together and take it home the same day.
