News $53 Silver and $4200 Gold hits All Time High!

Latest news
I purchased ~$3K worth of silver rounds a long time ago, before it hit its previous all-time high of $50/oz many years ago. I paid $40/oz back then. But then it crashed much lower than that. My wife was pissed and said: "No more investments for you!" :D But I hung onto them, thinking eventually it would come back and I could sell at a profit. I could do that now and double my money, but NOT doing that because I think it will go much higher. Continuing to HODL for now...

I am thinking about making another purchase, only for junk silver this time. Done some research and junk silver (meaning pre-65 dimes, quarters, and half-dollars) seems like the cheapest way to buy in. It's cheaper because the premiums they charge for junk are lower than 1 ounce silver rounds or bars.

My research shows that no matter what the face value of the coins are, all junk silver contains .715 oz of silver for every $1 of face value. Meaning, 10 dimes = .715 oz, 4 quarters = .715 oz, and 2 half-dollars = .715 oz. That's pretty cool, that the U.S. government did it that way! Very logical.

Then I did some simple maff. At ~$80 current spot price, coin face values = current fiat dollars:
• dime = $5.72
• quarter = $14.30
• half dollar = $28.60

That means each coin is now worth 57.2 times it's original face value!!! That's freaking crazy, and goes to show how much the dollar has devalued since 1964. Or at least that's what I think it means...

I have a fair amount of cash lying around, for emergencies. Anyway, I was going to spend another ~$3K very soon. Seems like "Money Metals" is the cheapest place to buy from, cheaper than APMEX and others. Also, dimes and quarters have a lower premium than half-dollars:

Or I can buy smaller amounts every month this year and dollar-cost-average instead. But if silver does go up to $100+ this year, probably better to spend the $3K now?

Appreciate any opinions and advice on tactics, other sellers, etc. Thanks!

If you have Reddit, go onto r/pmsforsale, people are selling there all the time and you could probably get it cheaper than moneymetals. I've tried buying from them before and I actually saved more (able to buy more) using Reddit and they're legit pieces. A lot of people on there have a lot of feedback

' Peer metals' and 'what not' have precious metals sellers.
'Collect Pure' also offers a venue for buyers and sellers!
Silver has legs!

Dollar cost averaging with buying a little more on the dips is always a good way to get a solid position into an investment. I would advise stackers to buy 1 oz .999 pure silver rounds (or coins if you can stomach the premium on Govt. stuff). Many refiners are currently not taking junk so it is hard to sell. Large bars are also hard to sell and at 100 oz would be above the IRS cash transaction reporting threshold.

@xrMike Try to seek out a local coin shop to purchase cheap 90% junk silver. Shops have been buying very low in this unstable period, so you may be able to score a cheaper deal.

Avoid 35% silver war nickels and 40% 1965-1970 kennedy halves.

I kept an eye on that forum for last few days, good pricing, but a lot of details required to purchase -- "middleman" required for new buyers, etc. If I was going to purchase on a regular basis, I would look into this though.

Costco Elk Grove currently has "PAMP Lady of LIBERTY" 10 OZ bars @ $809.99, if your wanting to get silver now. Pretty nice looking bar. Buy 3 no tax!

You can't see this item online, so I called the Elk Grove store to discuss. Lady told me, "Yes, we have these bars occasionally, but not regularly. We don't know when they are coming in. You cannot reserve them by phone. You have to buy in person, here at the store. You can call us to check if we have them, but I know that when we DO get them, they sell out the same day because all the locals tell each other and they come in and clean us out." :)

Thanks everybody for the advice!

I just purchased $35 face value of dimes/quarters mix at Money Metals Exchange online at $1 LESS per oz than melt price. That's about 25oz of silver.

Wish I would've done it over the weekend, when spot price was in the high 70's. It's ~$85 right now. :(

middleman isn't required, it's just there as an option. When i first started, i saw that but i instead sent the items before they paid but turned on record in messaging jic someone tried to screw me over. I only did it with people with a lot of feedback. I've gotten some good pieces on r/pmsforsale, and i've sold a bunch too. Everything is legit and you give feedback after took, so just got to always be mindful of that

Just under 90 for silver. Wild. I'm tempted to sell a ten or twenty pounds just for the hell of it.

I don't particularly like what it potentially means for the world, but nothing we can do about that.

Yep, $88.38 this instant, slowly climbing all morning.

Anybody know why retail sellers don't charge you any CA taxes on purchases over $2K? Money Metals Exchange has that policy, and Costco does also (I think). That's why I purchased the amount I did, to avoid the CA taxes on it.

I think it has to do with inflation stuff, code was put on so that anything over 2K isn't taxable and considered bulk purchase. Something like that, other people probably know a whole lot more than me. I've purchased over 2K several times to avoid the tax though and just got more. Hopefully Newscum, and his people, don't change that and do a sin tax on precious metals too lol

It used to be $0 for a long time then CA passsed a tax law to tax metals up to $2k

If you buy from the secondary market they usuy don’t collect under 2k.

Money metals is good..

The CA sales tax exemption was $1K, then it went to $1.5K and now it is $2K.
It makes it hard for those not well off to do dollar cost averaging investing in metals.

$91.88 right now, crazy!

Yeah, agreed. Not sure what it means for the U.S. or the world, but I have a small pile of cash right now and the lizard part of my brain is telling me: "diversify!" The future does not look good for the fiat/petro-dollar. China is making very smart moves to undercut our hegemony there...

And Bitcoin does not make sense to me either, fundamentally. There is no intrinsic value in it (talked about this in another thread). And gold has too high of a premium right now. Silver is more my speed, so I will buy even more soon and keep buying more on a regular basis, sit on it for awhile — years if I have to — and see what happens. :)

Right now with what’s going on, the dollar is going to devalue hard. They want to push rates down and start up the printers. Metals are front running, but crypto should be right behind it. Bitcoin is one thing but the next big thing is Ethereum IMO it has the same benefits as Bitcoin with programmability and much more useful as more banks and financial systems onboard it. What happened to Iran and Venezuela, Greece, the Pound etc. the dollar is gonna have its own test IMHO. Hedging with these types of digital and physical reserves isn’t a bad idea.

I’m still a little down on some of my crypto purchases but in the 1-2 year time span I hope to reclaim profitability. The recent run in SLV/GLD offset my crypto losses. I just don’t have faith that the dollar is going to strengthen in the short term 1-2 years.

Has anyone heard of the 80/50 ratio with silver and gold? I was looking at both ATH's for gold and silver futures just now: $4650.50 and $93.70 for gold and silver respectively.

Looks like the signal to buy gold and sell silver just hit when the ratio went below 50 when dividing the price of gold over the price of silver. The last time this happened was back in 2011.

Yes.. GSR ratio is a good metric to follow if you like easy.. 50 is usually the best you can do and earlier it was all the way at 110. I have some old videos on youtube on the subject.
