Hey all. Hope someone here can help me with this situation.

I came into possession of a VEPR 12 that belonged to my stepdad. I was told that in order to have it transferred into my name I had to find a way to make it a fixed mag, since CA apparently has some issue with shotguns that have removable magazines. Anyway, are there any special brands out there that cater to 12GA AK shotguns like this, or would a regular AK mag lock also work on this configuration?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a gas block port to make single shot.
I've installed one of those. But my local FFL said I needed to make it fixed mag as well.

When I had mine I made it a fixed mag so I could keep my semi auto feature. The problem is that in order to load the mag you'll have to remove the top cover, spring, bolt, and bolt carrier each time you want to load it (top loading), but putting it all back together leaves you with a live round in the chamber unless you throw in a snap cap in or you can remove the base plate, spring, and follower from your mag and load 7,8 maybe 9, but ten gets tricky as there is some spring tension to fight with. The fix is not all that intrusive, but will require the service of a skilled tig welder to apply two tig welds.

Saiga/Vepr magazine latches are completely different than standard AK magazine latches so you will not be able to use any commercial AK product on your shotgun.
The simplest fixed mag solution is to drill and tap for a screw that keeps the magazine into the receiver without even needing the magazine catch or a setscrew that keeps the magazine catch from moving.
Either of these need to be done so that you can not remove the lock screw without removal of the bolt carrier group.
I do this kind of work if you are in southern california.
