Shoot/don't shoot for CCW

I thought it might be helpful to have dialogue space about Shooting Decisions as CCW and debrief those we read about. If we get enough interests and posts, it could make a good subforum. Everyone has likely run through their own decision tree and criteria, revisiting that is good practice if only to confirm.

Let's start with this story at a Cheesecake Factory in Canoga Park, just N of Hwy 101. What would you do as a bystander?

According to LAPD, Shayne Suffern approached the woman and said “Give me back my baby" then took out an AR-15 and attempted to fire at her, but the rifle malfunctioned.

doesn’t SB2 make it where we can’t carry in that location? Im still a few months away from getting my CCW but I’m still on the fence if I’m going “concealed is concealed” route. So I’m not sure.

If I was just driving by looking for parking and I see that happening I’m likely to engage. If I’m eating inside and I see it happening outside I might just stay inside not knowing if there is multiple bad guys. If I had a family or kids with me I’d gtfo of situation or stay in a safe spot.



But I do like questions like this. It reminds me when I was in the Corps and we’d hold at least an hour discussion on ethical/moral: situations, questions, past battlefield battles and tells us what we would do at important junctions.

Instead of wasting time with mental masturbation, turn this off. Get a timer , a pencil and paper , log drills and par times. Note improvement over time. Take defensive classes and challenge yourself to compete from concealment and try force on force training. Pressure test your skill set.

Without that … everything else is useless.

If you want to get depressed , look at the skill set of the average person in a CCW class.

If I dry fired as much time as I wasted online, I would be a GM.

Don't get involved unless you know one of the people. I remember the CCW instructor Greg Block going thru situations after situations of shoot don't shoot scenarios that really happens and now people who decided to shoot are in jail or could of been if they had.

Stories of undercover operations gone bad.....stories of rape fantasy's being acted out..... and many more.

Now with people doing crap for social media....

In this situation is a perfect example of people screaming give me my baby when they didnt even know each other....

What if the situation was reversed and a single father has some crazy woman trying to take his child screaming its her..... and the dude pulls out a knife to stop this pyscho and you shoot him cause it looks justified to you. Sorry but your going to jail for a long time.

Speaking from personal experience. DO NOT get involved unless you or someone you are with are in clear and present danger of harm or death. Liberal states DA's absolutely WILL find a way to prosecute you and you will go to jail most likely. We do not live in a gun friendly state and they relish in making examples of us.

Mass casualty event aside where it is clearly evident you can safely engage if you can do it properly and safely. The best choice is do nothing until the threat is coming your way. Be a good witness get the details and then tell the Police.

My view in that scenarios is its unlikely I would shoot- just be a good witness. You don't know the players, if anyone else around is involved and as said in other places- the bullet will have a $30k ($50?) price tag attached- good shoot or not. For sure I feel conflicted as I dislike bullies and even more; bullies with guns. I suspect it would present a daunting background/backstop should you choose to fire, buncha shoppers walking around, kids and so on- all excited about whatever they just bought and not the emerging zoo taking place in front of them.

My CCW instructor put it pretty succinctly: make a list of people whose lives are important enough to you to go to jail. If you or any of those people are not in mortal danger, do not shoot. And even if the shooting is justified, you are almost certain to be sued as well.

An important thing to note is that you may not know what the hell is actually happening. Like what if that lady was actually stealing his baby? Unless it's a mass shooting and you are at risk, keep your pistol in your pants.
