Open Separated case

Anyone ever had this happen? Tikka T3 Ace Target--223. 27 grns BLC2 under a 55 grain HPBT. Running through a magazine and went to chamber and this was in the way. I do use a lot of range brass.

Excessive resizing can potentially cause the shoulder to bump back too far, the case stretches on firing and thins the brass.

Full length resize? How do you control the shoulder bump: do you adjust die for approximately .002-.003 shoulder bump? Or do you adjust die per instructions; screw down to shellholder and then 1/8-1/4 turn?

I run a dillon decap-full length sizer on a 750 and through the Dillon RT trimmer. Second pass on the other head for powder seat and crimp. Guess that's the problem with range brass. Never know what you're getting. I'm a hundred-yard paper puncher so even though I check brass-its range brass and use it. Guess if I want to start reaching out I'll need to get a little more serious about the brass. This was pretty surprising and a wake up call

I'll bet it was cracked before it was fired, do you use a case gauge? I find that usually catches this kind of thing because it will be bulged where it's cracked.

As you reuse cases the brass becomes thin and eventually it becomes thin enough in one spot that this happens.

Here's some 8x56r that was on its eighth or ninth reloading.

I case gauge every round I load religiously. find the problems on the bench not in the field.

For sure, yeah I think there's always a risk with range brass. I do like finding that nice fresh 556 with the annealing coloration on it. I never hesitate to chuck brass when it's getting funny looking

picked some up today---threw about 20 pieces away just on the first pass---I'm sure there will be more that goes into the scrap bucket---they get melted down into 1.35 lb ingots. Gonna have to start buying once fired police range brass. Safer bet for used brass.
