While waiting for the new generation SCAR 17S to be shipped to SoCal, I ran across a video about the HK rifle. I'd like to hear if anyone has any experience with both or why one is preferred over the other. One thing I do notice is the availability of the HK mags over the SCAR currently. Weight seems to be about the same, I was hoping the HK would be lighter as that may have swayed my decision a bit.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the SCAR17 is lighter.
According to their site specs...

SCAR17S- 8.9lbs

HK- 8.8lbs/ .50lb magazine

Pretty similar. Not sure if the SCAR is weighed with or without the magazine

Also not sure if they used a 10 or 20 round mag for weights.

Hmmm yes I see it is listed at 8.8, every where else it's listed at 9.84. Not sure why the discrepancy but when I held one, it definitely felt heavier than the SCAR.

I own a 17s and I have a good friend that works as a design engineer for FN in SC. He and I agree that both the HK and FN are outstanding weapons. It might come down to which one feels most comfortable to you. The weights are comparable as is the weight distribution. Are you going into combat or hunting with the weapon? If you aren't lugging it around or shooting it offhand, I wouldn't think a couple of ounces one way or the other would make much difference

SCAR is definitely lighter but, in my case, I ended up ditching the polymer receiver for aluminum--so it's now closer in weight to the HK. That being said, AR style PMAGS are lighter than the FN mags so it's pretty much a wash in the end. Trade-offs.

Like others have said--can't go wrong with either at the end of the day.

I bought and used both and found the SCAR to be a better all around do all rifle - short and long range function, CQB, and vehicle exercise. The one gripe about the HK - is way too heavy for a 16" barrel... My opinion, from personal experience.

Looks like WBT has the new scar now.

Of note, would consider the B&T APC308 and Sig Spear. I had my spear cut down to 14 and that really helped with weight (they use a ridiculously thick barrel profile). These guns would get you away from propriety magazines

I just looked and nothing is in stock. There was one available when I made this thread, but it was the previous generation and out of stock now. Link?

I'll check those out.

Thanks for your take. I too am leaning towards the SCAR although I have not shot or held one.

That's two that felt HK was heavier.

You are welcome and good luck in your search.

Folding stocks are fantastic! oh wait never mind… No one is going to confuse you for having an “AR10” if you have the SCAR. They’re both fantastic guns though and you should get both!
