Helping a friend legalize his M1A purchased before the flash hider became an issue. Removed the set screw and loosened the castle nut. The device appears to be stuck on the barrel. No movement after repeated wacks on the bayonet lug with a brass punch/ball peen hammer. I read this could be due to locktite getting into the splines (not sure why anyone would locktite the castle nut, but maybe). If so, applying heat may be the answer. The question is; how much? Is a propane torch too much? Will that affect the parkerizing?
 
Some heat from a propane torch or the like should do the trick.
 
Make sure you keep backing off the castle nut as you tap the muzzle device forward.
 
Well I got it off using heat, but I still had to whack it pretty hard to get it moving. It was a match barrel which SA said are harder to remove. Glad it doesn't have to come off for normal maintenance.

For future reference, you can frequently loosen something that seems to be stuck by trying to tighten it a little bit first. It's counterintuitive but it does work quite well. Oh yes, be sure to apply a little bit of anti-seize compound to the threads before mounting anything else in place. This is an example of anti-seize.

Any time I've run into this with my M1A's, Break Free CLP & light to medium taps from a rubber mallet worked great!
 
I am trying to figure out why after 25 years of owning an illegal assault weapon, why care now? LOL!
