I am a proponent of "buy cheap and stack deep" with ammo and am blessed with a well stocked bunker, I mean basement. But in the past I have not been too picky about where I get ammo cans to store my stash. Last week I opened a can that had not been opened in a couple years, and found all the cardboard ammo boxex soggy and acutal standing water in the bottom of the can. I was shocked, as my basement is normally bone dry. I looked in the other ammo cans around it and they were fine. The only time I have had water in my basement was at the beginning of 2023 when we were getting the torrential rains. There was a half inch or so of standing water, confined to one side of the basement. I checked the ammo cans closest to that corner at the time and they were all fine. Apprently I should have gone further with checks.
So I dried out the boxes, threw in some fresh dessicant packs and put it in a different can. Fortunately all of the ammo in the box looks fine. Then I took the offending box out, filled it halfway up with water, and left it on a dry concrete step in the sun yesterrday. Fifteen minutes later, the can had peed in its pants:
Apparently the welds on the seams on the bottom were not water tight. Ironically, I have always worried about the seals on the lid, but this one sealed perfectly on top. I left it upside down overnight with water in it and not drop came out. Not sure where I bought this can, but a quick search shows them for sale at Walmart right now with good reviews. Here is the offending label:
I know, "Made in China!" Probably a plot to make sure that we are unable to defend ourselves when "Red Dawn" comes. "Stout Stuff" is not. You have been warned.
