Are medical care, veterans benefits, SNAP actually neoliberal policies?

Ha! All of these under the current administration, and in general GOP policies are emphasized as better under privatization, reduced public spending, and individual responsibility and the greek tragedy of it all is that too many people (impacted) are in the stands screaming "more please".

What the policy ultimately forgets is that in the hands of a private sector, all of it has to be run under the mindset of profit, shareholder value etc. Capitalism built this country and I benefit a great deal from it, but for profit medical, veterans affairs, or SNAP just cant work.

There is a great book about this called The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, written by Joel Baken

The book's central argument hinges on corporate personhood....aka the ramifications of Citizens United. Corporations being legally treated as persons, allows one to apply a psychological profile to them, and when you do, the institutional drive to maximize shareholder profit at all other costs maps closely onto clinical psychopathy: no empathy, disregard for others' wellbeing, inability to feel remorse, and manipulation to achieve self-interested ends.

Now apply those principals to managing care programs and it gets pretty dim.

I'd say that depends on what the underlying power systems of government and business demand at any given time in the business cycle

We used to have privatized firefighters. It caused quite a few problems. Fire trucks competing over fires, teams charging building owners before putting out fires, etc.

The GOP's playbook is so simple: grind gov. to a halt, point at its efficiencies, promise better service with privatization. We'll see how it works. A defense that gets audited WOULD be great but there's no reason a private version would agree to an audit if a gov. version won't, imo.
