Cold Starts for Range Training

Any good recommendations for cold starts for the range? I have been to the Baer Solutions (Drew Estell) and I really like this cold start drill.

BAER SOLUTIONS STANDARDS TARGET, aka "baer" target
The standards target was created to gauge your performance first thing in your training and at the end. We don't get to warm up in real life so this is shot cold, meaning no warm up. Suggested distance is 5 meters. As with anything, once you have gotten good at it go ahead and move back to 7 or even 10 if you can. If you miss, you fail, so be accountable for your rounds. 9 seconds or faster is passing. Ensure progress in your training. Getting complacent or comfortable keeps us stagnant, always strive to get better.

  1. From the holstered position, hands off of gun at sides, on signal draw and engage left or right 6" x 3.5" rectangle with 5 rounds.
  2. Transition to other rectangle and engage with 5 rounds.
  3. Perform slide lock reload and engage center circle with 3 rds.
  • Perform drill with 10 rd magazine first, 3 rd magazine second, and have a full mag prepared to get gun back up after drill.
  • Once drill is completed, ensure you perform another slide lock reload to get your gun up and scan your sector/threat area.

I'll give their warm up drill and targets a go tomorrow, thanks for sharing them! I've only done double taps and the Bill Drill as a cold start.

I track my cold shot exercises pretty regularly and intentionally. Even when just arriving to the range I get anxious 😅 . I had been writing them down but lost my tracker notebook so I'm going to create a digital one.
  • IDPA targets/keep everything in the 8" circle.
  • The last few runs have me in advanced times with 100% accuracy so now making the circle smaller (7")
  • Starting to mix in drills at 10yds (and 10-10-15yds)
  • Only upon arrival to the range, true first shot
  • Concealed when possible or starting from 1 hand low at static line
I've mostly done Bill (yyrds) and 10-10-10 (Iast had 16 logged of each) and started Farnam/Mozambique more regularly.

Here are my most common drills and the last summary that I ran (could find):
DrillSetupDescriptionPar/Elite timeMy Current Average time - accuracy

Farnam Drill
  • 1mag - 6rd + 1 dummy
  • 1mag - 2rd - 7/10yds
Fire til empty, clearing malfunction, reload, fire til empty15secs11.41secs -- 100% (at 7ds)
Mozambique2 chest, 1 head5secs2.66secs - 84% (at 7ds)

Someone recently introduced me to Tom Givens’ Armada Standards, after his Nissan Armada, as a relevant drill for defensive use.

I was at West End yesterday and decided to run it cold with my EDC Glock 19 in AIWB, which I honestly haven’t drawn from the holster in almost a year. Ended up scoring 199/200 in 27.10 seconds, for a hit factor of 7.34 - about 2 seconds shy of the 8.00 benchmark. I’m looking forward to trying it again next time, because I felt like I shot it without much urgency, mostly focused on getting 10/X-ring hits.
