Although it's far in advance of my permit's expiration, I was making sure I understood the timing requirements. I came across the following info on the LAPD website:

Current Los Angeles City residents with a current LAPD CCW who wish to renew their permit, shall complete their application online at the below Permititum link 90 days prior to the expiration of their LAPD CCW. Renewals are handled on a first come first serve basis, applications received after the 90 days are not guaranteed to be renewed before the expiration date.

OK, that's fairly clear, although it's pretty demanding that you have to renew exactly 90 days before or expect it not to be renewed before expiration. It doesn't sound like they'll accept a renewal application before 90 days prior to expiration, so you have to do it EXACTLY 90 days prior.

However, it goes on to say this:

Effective January 1, 2026, current residents of Los Angeles who hold a valid CCW permit issued by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) must submit their CCW renewal application within 90 days prior to the permit’s expiration date.

Failure to submit the renewal application within this 90-day window will require the applicant to restart the process as a new (initial) applicant, pursuant to AB 1078, specifically Penal Code § 26225(e).

Here, they're clearly talking about the 90 day window that starts before expiration, and they're plainly saying that if you apply after expiration, you can't renew; you must reapply. That seems unusually restrictive, and it seems to conflict with what they say later on:

Per Assembly Bill 1078, renewal applications cannot be accepted 90 days after expiration.

So, I thought I'd have a look at the penal code itself to determine whether a new application is required immediately after expiration, or 90 days after expiration.

Section 26225 (e):

If a licenseholder fails to submit an application for renewal within 90 days of the expiration of their license, the licensing authority shall immediately request that the department terminate state or federal subsequent notification pursuant to subdivision (d) of Section 11105.2.

It just says "within 90 days of the expiration" without clearly stating whether they mean before or after expiration. No wonder the LAPD website is so muddled about the issue. The code itself s everyone around.

If anyone has any practical experience with LAPD's renewal policy, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Can’t you just call your IA and ask them directly? I would trust what they have to say about their own policy a lot more than any answers I got from random strangers on the internet.
